Now that most of my kids are now grownups and have lives of their own, I cherish these times all the more because all we have is the memories of time spent together. But I decided to take the 35 minute drive anyway to this point just off of the Parkway. I spent 30 to 45 minutes driving this same stretch of road back and forth until the conditions were what I was looking for. And even though there was no fog in the valley, high up on the ridge was howling winds and fog with a few snow flurries thrown in. Thankful I decided to make the trip up. As the sun began to rise, it started burning off some of the fog and creating a beautiful soft light. As i rounded the bend, this was the scene that awaited. I shot here for a few minutes, as the longer I waited, the better the light was. Another one of the reasons I love to shoot from this high road. You just never know what awaits you. It was 37 degrees with 20 to 30 plus mph winds. The great thing about this location is the possibility of drastic conditions from day to day because of the high elevation. I was up in this area 3 days and the first day was cool and calm, while the last day was blowing snow, fog and wind. One thing is for sure; you never know what you may find when cruising the high roads and back roads that wind and meander through this beautiful land. This image from the North Rim, is one of my favorite from here. And we had the place all to ourselves, which is rare. Don't ever pass up the chance if you have an opportunity to see the Grand Canyon. I used to start out West in September and follow the Fall season to Western Nc, back to Georgia, and out to Utah in mid November. At least then I could drag it out a couple of months. But since I haven't done that in a while, it sure does go by quickly. But at least I found a little time to catch the tail end of my favorite season in Western Nc. We hit the peak perfectly and beauty surrounded us in every direction. As if the beauty of the mountains was not enough, sprinkle that with millions of blooming flowers. As much as I love the Spring, Fall is still my favorite time here and my favorite season. Hope to be spending some time in Western NC and maybe even Colorado in the coming months. Last night was one of those times. I was resting at home just after dinner and noticed some clouds rolling in I knew there was a 40% chance of thunderstorms, but just two hours earlier, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. If i am being honest, I was feeling a little lazy and had decided not to go. But the colors of the sky convinced me it might be something special. I grabbed my camera and one lens and my tripod and went running out the door, so fast in fact, I forgot my glasses. I can see far off with no problem, but trying to read off the back of the camera is a little fuzzy. Thankfully I made everything out and set up and shot this 5 second exposure at f/11 and knew I had what I needed. I was able to get 10 shots off before the color disappeared. This was my first attempt at shooting the Geminids at peak and combining a composite image to showcase some of the shooting stars that we witnessed. I must say that to experience them in person is much more impressive than to get home and comb through the hundreds of images to find only a handful of shooting stars that were captured on camera. I have to admit that it is a bit of a letdown because they just don't look the same as with the naked eye. Nonetheless, it was an experience getting up at 2am and going out with 5 of my kids and planting ourselves in a chair for 3 hours to witness such an event. But many times in the mountains just before the sun peaks above the horizon, the sky turns this beautiful magenta color for a very short time. There is a mystery to them that makes me think of how they grow in the water and multiply fairly quickly to create vas's cypress forests. My two favorite seasons of the trees are Spring & Fall for their beautiful colors and delicate needles. in Shining Rock Wilderness and watch the last sunrise of 2018, but the forecast was for clear skies and I didn't want an image of the sun rising into a dull and cloudless sky.  When first light first kissed the trees on the mountains, I could see the Rime ice had formed and was anxious to get more light on the landscape so I could photograph some of the beautiful scenes. Looking from the trail at the top down, I believed that I could get to the place that I felt would lead to the best arrangement of the scene.  Upon climbing down, I quickly realized that the boulders were much larger and the drops much higher close up.  In this image, I am perched on a tiny rock between 2 rapids just before they tumble some 10 to 15 feet behind me.  So though I would have liked to Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/window-soul/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/window_to_the_soul_74A7626.jpg Window to the Soul This was my first trip to the slot canyons, but it won't be my last.  It is a beautiful and mysterious place filled with light, shadow, shape, color, texture, and wonder.  I could have stayed down here all day and explored.   Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/smoky-blue/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/smoky_blue_74A7299.jpg Smoky Blue Great Smoky Mountains National Park https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/composure/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/composure_KWR0306.jpg Composure A very popular place for sunset from the Clingman's Dome parking lot.  This particular evening, there were several hundred photographers lined up tripod to tripod trying to capture that magical sunset to add to their portfolio.  It was mostly cloudy with very few breaks in the clouds and therefore was looking like a bust.  Some 30 minutes after the official sunset, most everyone had packed up there gear and headed down the mountain for some dinner.  Honestly, I probably would have been one of those that gave in, but I actually came up to do some Star photography, abd so I was waiting around for the "dead of night".  When all of a sudden, the colors began to light up in the sky to our left and right and the ones left or not quite pulled out of the parking lot began to scramble to get the "money" shot.  It was chaos for about 5 or 10 minutes as people tripped all over themselves to get back set up before the color was once again gone.  Patience does pay off, and sometimes it is good to be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time for the wrong reason. Rocky Mountain National Park https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/utopia/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/utopia_74A6732.jpg Utopia We drove up Washington Gulch road to the top of Paradise Basin looking for a place to shoot the sunset.  On the way up we found this place just below a cabin sitting on the side of the mountain with not a soul around.  We stopped on the way back down, as we found nothing better at the top with this view and the fields of flowers to capture sunset.  The color in the sky only lasted about 2 minutes as it faded away.  If you look very closely in the valley, you can see the town of Crested Buttte nestled between the mountains. Crested Butte, Colorado https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/dream-big/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/_KWR6825_HDR2.jpg Dream Big This particular morning, myself and 4 of my children hiked in the dark up to Dream Lake in RMNP for what I had hoped would be a glorious sunsrise.  I have been to RMNP many times before, but mostly in the Fall when the skies tend to be blue and cloudless.  So, needless to say, I have had my share of dissappointing images from here, but this morning would be different.  I knew when I awoke and looked out the window, that the East was clear with scattered cloud cover in the West with an approaching storm that was scheduled to hit around lunch that day and stick around for the next couple of days.  To our suprise, we had the place all to ourselves that morning as we witnessed one of the best sunrises I have seen in RMNP over Dream Lake. Basalt Colorado https://www.kevinwreaves.com/photo/river-gold/ https://www.kevinwreaves.com/images/large/river_gold_2931.jpg River of Gold I had on several occasions attempted to hike up before first light to dream lake for some sunrise photos, but was blocked by a solid sheet of ice just past Nymph Lake.  So on this particular warmer evening, my oldest son and I made the trek up for a sunset not knowing what to expect.  Dream lake is not normally a very good sunset spot this time of the year, as you are shooting almost directly into the sun.  So, once we arrived and found the lake to be completely frozen over, I knew that I could focus my attention on doing some abstract work.
